So the other day my friend and I were chatting about The Dark Knight [which I still haven't seen, shame on me], and he mentioned that the Watchmen movie trailer had played before the film, and that he was totally psyched for March now. I stupidly went, "Is Watchmen really that good? I don't really like its art and the names of its characters are more than a little 'Meh'"; he gave me this derisive look, and then sat me down at a comp to read through all 12 issues.
And all I can say now is "Wow". I finally understand why people consider it the crown jewel in the graphic novel kingdom; after I finished reading it I utubed the trailer/teaser [
] and although there are some some obvious changes [Ozymandias and Nite Owl, do you read me?] it definitely looks like Mr. 300 plans another tight comic-to-film transition [the music helps too: when Billy Corgan croons "In your darkest hour" and the American flag is opened, I got chills]. SO for all your other Watch-ers, what are your expectations for the film, and what did you think of the teaser clip? Me, I'm going with my friend; I can't wait for March to arrive.
I'm horrificly excited, but I'm trying to tone it down in the off chance I get disappointed. I really want to go watch Dark Knight again on the IMAX, with the hopes of getting to see the trailer on that huge a screen instead of off my computer. My Dark Knight only had a James Bond trailer, and the next Terminator trailer. Blase when I could have had Watchmen, XD.
I admit, I only got about a quarter of the way through it before my friend asked for it back, :x, so I have some catching up to do before March. (I really hate reading books and comics on the computer, I just prefer in the hand sooo much more, XD). It's next on my comic buy list next to Flight 5 and Out of Picture 2. XD
I love watchmen and I wouldnt get my hopes up in your place I expect it to be bad who knows ill see what they say at comiccon everyone from watchmen will be there
i concur, really if you liked the comics theres no reason to really want this film to even happen. this sort of reminds me of the struggle of certain filmmakers to get a film adaption of kerouc's on the road produced. I mean seriously....wth is the point of adapting something is essentially unique because of the medium it is on/crtiquing.
on a completely narrative point of view, yea they can and snyder is probably doing a close adaption but much of the rest of the charm is gone. The whole point of the comic really was as a statement towards superhero cliches and conventions plus a hugely satirical take upon the medium. Hence why the original one had both a ridiculous campy but seriously disturbing nature to it. Snyder's film just looks like it trys to way too hard to be taken seriously, and its characters to almost echo a sense of "cool" or "badass-ness" when really they were all meant to be complete wrecks.
On a non-serious note, anyone take a notice of the trailer music? Think back a decade to the year 1997 which saw the release of possibly the worst but definitely the most hated comicbook film ever to see a release, Batman & Robin. The themesong to said film was The Smashing Pumpkins' The End is the Beginning is the End. The song that plays over the Watchmen trailer is actually the B-side from this very same single and actually just a sort of darker rendition of the same piece bein called "The Beginning is the End is the Beginning".
Who knows it may just be coincidence, but some fans have been debating whether or not this is either an unintentional sign of failure or some sort of conscious part of the trailers editor to say hey....this film won't be like that crapfest known as Batman & Robin.
I was reading the EW article on "Watchmen", and so apparently Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the film and whatever happened, it was going to be a film, end of story. Snyder saw that and was like "Oh crap, if the film is going to be made anyways then at least it should be the best it can be, and not in the hands of someone who doesn't understand comics." I mean, apparently Jude Law was interested in being one of the Crimebusters? And god knows that would've been some "interesting" casting. I would prefer that "Watchmen" remain un-filmed, but it was going to be made regardless thanks to Hollywood machinations so it might as well be in the hands of someone who, even if he can't get it right, at least can get it the closest to a good Hollywood adaptation as possible. I wanna give Snyder the benefit of the doubt; most other filmmakers wouldn't even touch this project for fear of the inevitable acerbic retribution, and for him to step up and take control of a project he's against but can't bear to see done wrong is gutsy.
Another friend of mine passed over the "Watchmen" movie just because of its music; he was like, "Snyder's acknowledging his failure by choosing B&R music", but another friend of mine told me that the only good thing to come out of B&R was its music, so maybe Snyder's channeling that one success...?
Actually, I fucking loved the Batman & Robin Soundtrack now that you mention it. Both those Pumpkins tracks are personal favorites in addition to a great re-recording of Jewels "Foolish Games".
As to the notion that such a film was inevitable, although I see your logic, I can't agree that Snyder in anyway is somehow "saving" this project from anything. I dont see him in anyway getting it close to the source material. If 300 is any indicator in addition to the rest of his filmography, it should be a no brainer.
Also, yes film rights have been held for a very long time. This never in no way ever equal a guarantee that the film will be greenlit. More rights are bought that never see production then those that do. What happened is, Watchmen got shuffled around as potential film for the last decade even going into the hands of Terry Gillaim at one point who actualyl dropped it saying it just couldn't be done in a redeemable fashion. The the project just sat there until Snyder came along and communicated a strong desire to do said project. So my understanding is, he wasn't handed the project, he essentially requested in the shadow of 300's immense success.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the man personally and I will surely watch the damn thing when it comes out, I just won't send any money his way.
In all honesty I almost feel sorry for Moore. First they butchered From Hell, then League of Extraordinary Gentleman, then V for Vendetta, and now pontentially this....
ahah yea i remember being quite shocked when i saw this when it aired. its awesome how they got moore and the others to actually voice themselves
